History and Achievements
China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute Co., Ltd. (or BRDI in abbreviation), was founded in 1950 as a state-owned company with more than 500 employees, three of which are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and three of which are Chinese Masters of Engineering Design. BRDI provides various engineering services, including: bridge surveys, site investigations, engineering design, design proof checks, consultancy, scientific research, structural inspections, retrofit and monitoring, construction supervision, project management, and D&B project implementation.
During the past 59 years, BRDI has provided engineering investigations, surveys, and design for more than 600 modern, major bridges of various types throughout China and more than 10 other countries all over the world. This includes work on 16 bridges across bays, 41 across the Yangtze River and 23 across the Yellow River. Almost all long-span railway bridges and combined rail-cum-road bridges in China are designed by BRDI.
BRDI has extensive expertise with combined rail-cum-road bridges. From the 1950s to 2000, BRDI independently designed the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, Jiujiang Yangtze River Bridge, Wuhu Yangtze River Bridge, which are all combined rail-cum-road bridges with steel trusses. The constructions of these four bridges are regarded as milestones in Chinese modern railway bridge history. In the 21st century, BRDI continues to develop innovative technologies for long-span rail-cum-road bridges. We have completed the design of such well-known rail-cum-road bridges like Tianxingzhou rail-cum-road Yangtze River Bridge, Zhengzhou Yellow River Bridge (multi-pylon cable-stayed bridge), Bingzhou Yellow River Bridge (rail-cum-road), and Nanjing Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge. As a result of our work on these projects, BRDI has accumulated sufficient experience in the combined rail-cum-road bridge field and has trained a large number of professional and skilled design personnel.
In the examples of BRDI’s experience that follows, many of the bridges discussed have set world records. The Tianxingzhou Yangtze River Bridge is the largest rail-cum-road cable-stayed bridge that accommodates the heaviest live load in the world.
BRDI also has extensive experience with overseas projects: AASHTO was adopted by BRDI in the detail design for the Paksey Bridge in Bangladesh, and BRDI conducted the analysis and monitoring of the superstructure’s alignment during construction. BRDI provided independent proof checks for the Rama VIII Bridge in Thailand. And we also provided consultancy & construction supervision service for Sofoline Interchanges Project in Kumasi. BRDI is also involved with numerous major projects in Myanmar, Vietnam and Turkey.
Corporation Culture
Bridge design is not only a kind of science, but also an art. In BRDI’s 58 years history, its bridge culture brought many surprises to the world, and BRDI will continue to promote the development of bridge science & technology. BRDI always keeps advanced to modern management philosophy; the “people-oriented” guideline has helped her staff realize their self-value along with both the corporation’s and their personal growing up.
Excellent Specialties
BRDI delivers complete professional services covering design, consultancy, survey, engineering reconnaissance, geotechnical investigation, bridge hydrology, bridge dynamic analysis, development, science research and design for steel bridges, project investment estimate, budgetary estimate, project final accounts, tender quotation, economic evaluation of project cost, bridge health diagnosis and treatment and construction supervision. BRDI has been devoted to the research of new material, innovative structures, innovative techniques and FEA, CAD software for bridge engineering in order to make the design optimized in economy and advanced in technology. BRDI also got many achievements in structural designs under deep water and complicated geological condition. Many successful pioneering structures in girder bridges, cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges were developed by BRDI creatively.
Staff and High-tech Orientation
BRDI pays much attention to bridge design and construction research as well as talent training. BRDI’s top concerns are improving its design and science research ability, and applying new technology to design and engineering field. Furthermore, BRDI’s designs can always contain state-of-the-art knowledge and maintain economically reasonability and technical pioneering.
Software Support
Science Research Department of BRDI was established in 1978, being engaged in software development, LAN management, seismic analysis of bridge structure, vehicle-bridge interaction analysis, static and dynamic analysis and research of complicated bridges. in the past 20 years, this department has independently developed many software including PRBP (analysis for PC beam bridge), NSAP (analysis for steel truss), SCDS (for cable-stayed structure design), PCBCAD( for PC beam’s drawing), PFCAD system( for pile foundation drawing), 3D bridge (analysis for special bridge), PFDS(analysis for pile foundation design), STCAD(for design of steel truss) and VBIAS(vehicle-bridge interaction analysis system), all of which enable BRDI to provide state-of-the-art structural analysis and services. Furthermore, those softwares have been awarded on national, ministerial or provincial level.
